Atkinson, Joy

Joy Atkinson is a private consultant specializing in developing and implementing community outreach programs in the public and private sectors. She offers services in public relations, public affairs, and administrative support as a project administrator/coordinator. For 16 years Joy Atkinson served as Chief of Staff for Former Assemblywoman Gwen Moore in the 47th Assembly District in the California State Assembly. She has maintained her political and social activism throughout the years. She served as President of New Frontier Democratic Club, the oldest Black democratic club in California; serves as chair of the program committee of the Los Angeles African American Women's Political Action Committee, and is a delegate to the California Democratic Party. She is one of the founders of Women Building for the Future/The Future PAC. She was selected from California as an Alternate Delegate to the 2004 Democratic National Convention. She is a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority. In March of 2002, she was appointed by Mayor James Hahn as a commissioner with the South Los Angeles Area Planning Commission. Joy served as President of that commission for 1½ years. Gaining a quick and thorough knowledge of land use, management and planning, her talents were recognized and in November of 2003 she was appointed by Mayor James Hahn and confirmed by the Los Angeles City Council as a commissioner with the Los Angeles City Planning Commission where she just completed her service. She currently serves on the board of the Los Angeles African American Women’s Public Policy Institute where she administers a women’s leadership course in partnership with the University of Southern California.
